The scroll

Parchment is a material made from animal skin, whose skin goes through a process in which the fleece is removed, an animal skin and then stretching to get the plates are developed with the book, when the skin is taken from an old animal, the result is a scroll of good quality but coarser, if instead the animal is young, you get a lot thinner parchment called vellum. The origin of its name comes from the city of Pergamum, where there was high productivity of high quality of this material.

The parchment was used to write literary texts so sacred. But it was a high material cost, and therefore no longer used the papyrus for many years, because papyrus was cheaper material, easier to get and more fragile. Although the parchment it was replacing, because it was a better product, was more durable, and had a great advantage over the papyrus, was that you could write on both sides of the skin, while the papyrus could be written only by one. Also used the parchment to write books and legal works, while the papyrus was used in writing the letters.
